Haba Snow Mountain is most easily reduced to a single number: 5396 meters.

But once you actually get there, you realize numbers carry no emotion. Emotion comes from the moment your breathing grows shallow, from the moment your fingers go cold, from the moments when you only need to walk a short incline but must stop to reset your rhythm.

I don’t want to write Haba as “Where to go for your first snow mountain.” That kind of headline is useful, but it misleads people into thinking snow mountains are easy. Haba is commercially mature and the route is relatively clear, but it is still high altitude. High altitude never becomes gentle just because you’ve booked a well-established route.

Oxygen deprivation shuts down tough talk

In the city, many people push through on willpower alone. You can power through overtime, pull all-nighters, and survive product launches.

But high altitude dismantles that approach.

Speed up even slightly and your heart rate spikes. Talk too much and you run out of breath. Try to prove you can still push forward, and your body gives immediate, blunt feedback: gasping.

For programmers, this feedback is unfamiliar yet valuable. We’re so used to solving problems with our brains, but on a snow mountain, the brain is secondary. What truly determines whether you keep going is your body—the underlying system.

Departing in the dark is its own test

Snow mountain routes often require early starts. It’s still dark, and your headlamp illuminates only a small patch of ground ahead. You can’t see far; you only see your boots, the gravel, and the footprints of the person in front of you.

Don’t overthink it.

My method is to break the path into tiny segments: reach that rock ahead, make the next turn, get to where the group stops for water. Don’t fixate on the altitude or the summit. Thinking too far ahead makes you anxious.

Writing code is the same. You don’t build large systems in one go. You advance function by function, module by module, test by test. The snow mountain just makes that lesson colder and harder.

Gear above the snow line isn’t for show

Many items look like consumerism in the city but become absolute necessities above the snow line.

Gloves matter. When your fingers go cold, zipping jackets, using your phone, or twisting bottle caps slows down significantly. A headlamp is critical, especially for early departures or late returns. Sunglasses are essential too; snow glare can be painful.

Trekking poles aren’t decoration for me. They help on ascents by sharing the load and on descents by helping control pace. On scree slopes especially, a pair of poles prevents a lot of panic.

When I buy outdoor gear now, I care less about looking cool and more about whether it reduces mistakes at critical moments. For independent developers, time is expensive, and health is even more so. One fall or injury delays every subsequent plan.

Don’t compare yourself to others

The most pointless thing on a snow mountain is racing others.

Some people acclimatize faster, some have naturally better cardio, some have climbed higher before. Chasing someone else’s pace with your own body only leads to injury.

On my trip, I clearly felt a stretch where my condition wasn’t great. I could keep moving, but I shouldn’t speed up. I chose to slow down and regain my breathing. Watching others pass me brought a touch of frustration, but that frustration isn’t worth anything.

What truly matters outdoors is judgment. Knowing how far you can go today, knowing when to eat, when to stop, and when to concede.

What this climb reminded me of

Haba didn’t make me a stronger person.

It just made me clearer about one thing: your body isn’t an infinite resource. How you sleep, eat, and train in daily life gets amplified at high altitude.

Many developers habitually relegate health to the backlog, telling themselves they’ll address it after this version ships, after this product launches, after this project stabilizes. But your body won’t wait for your schedule. When it fails, priority automatically shifts to P0.

This is also why I later included outdoor activities in XBSTACK. It’s not a lifestyle accessory; it’s part of a long-term asset system. Anyone who wants to code, build products, invest, and read for the long haul needs a body that runs reliably.

Closing thoughts

Haba is worth doing, but don’t underestimate it.

A well-established route doesn’t mean simple. Commercialization doesn’t mean safe. Just because others completed it doesn’t mean you must.

After losing oxygen, people become remarkably honest. You realize how much debt you’ve accumulated against your body in daily life, and understand that true strength isn’t about pushing through exhaustion—it’s about having enough reserve to return safely.
